The Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) is a state-of-the-art regenerative medicine research facility situated at Monash’s Clayton campus. The institute is a joint venture between Monash University and the Government of Victoria. ARMI employs a multi-centre, cross-disciplinary and highly focused approach to develop innovative clinical protocols as well as pursue rapid commercial transfer of its technologies related to regenerative medicine. At the core of ARMI strategy is the Future Scientific Leaders Program based on the model at the world renowned European Molecular Biology Laboratories (EMBL) established throughout Europe. The program allows young scientists the freedom to pursue discovery-based research and position them to become the scientific leaders of tomorrow.

The institute builds on the University's existing strengths in biomedical research, and supports the critical infrastructure required to deliver the next generation of discoveries in regenerative medicine.

As the successful candidate you will be a vital member of the administrative team which provides support to the Office of Director and the broader ARMI staff and students. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, provide outstanding customer service and organisation of varied events that meet quality expectations. This role will also support the activities of the Centre for Commercialisation of Regenerative Medicine, Australia (CCRM Australia).

Within this role you will be responsible for:

  • event planning, design and production within time limits
  • scheduling meetings, seminars and other events
  • organising facilities and details such as decor, catering, entertainment, transportation, location, invitee lists, special guests, equipment, promotional material etc
  • administrative duties, preparation of correspondence and materials, organisation of events and meetings and other duties as required
  • administrative assistance to the Philanthropy and Communications consultant
  • organising travel, accommodation and activities for invited guests.

Professor of Cardiovascular Research 
Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute 
Monash University

Expressions of interest are invited from established researchers to establish a research program focused on Cardiovascular Science at the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute at Monash University. Applications in all areas of Cardiac and Vascular Biology and disease are welcome, but we are specifically interested in those researchers whose interests are in regeneration and stem cell biology or tissue engineering or epigenetics as applied to cardiovascular diseases.

Candidates for this Professorial position must have an MD and/or PhD degree, evidence of sustained competitive funding, and an outstanding publication record of quality peer reviewed science. Successful candidates will be expected to maintain a vigorous research program that addresses fundamental questions in the broad field of cardiovascular biology. Candidates with a focus on clinical research and with research expertise that complements those of current investigators at the Institute are of special interest.  Clinician scientists are particularly encouraged to apply and an option for a clinical appointment may be available in within Monash Heart to appropriate candidates.   

The Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute currently has 16 research groups, and a total of 230 researchers, students and support staff from 21 different countries. Its location on the Monash University campus offers a highly stimulating biomedical research environment allowing Institute researchers to work closely with other university research organisations including the Monash Institute for Medical Engineering (MIME) and Biomedical Discovery Institute (BDI) and CSIRO, one of Australia’s leading multi-disciplinary research institutions. The vision promoted at ARMI is to exploit and connect the multi disciplinarity of its groups, aligning their complementary capacities around key research pipelines; Heart and muscle development and regeneration, Immunity and Regeneration, Stem cells and Regeneration and Neural regeneration. 

Of particular importance for this position is the establishment of the Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH) on the Monash University Campus.  The VHH will enable world class research and education in addition to specialised clinical care with key features including an expanded medical and cardiovascular health research program that builds upon the current activities of both Monash University and the Monash Cardiovascular Research Centre. 

The successful applicant will have access to the state of the art clinical and basic science research facilities planned for this hospital and have significant opportunity to shape the research environment of the hospital precinct as it emerges. 

An increasing focus on translational research is an integral part of the Institute’s research mission, and individuals that have a demonstrable ability to integrate clinical and basic science elements into a successful translational research program will be highly sought after. The successful candidate will be expected to strengthen the Institute and Monash’s profile and research networks both from an internal and external perspective, engaging with the wider cardiovascular research community, locally, nationally and internationally.

The successful applicant will have access to state-of-the-art technological core facilities within the university, including flow cytometry and advanced molecular imaging (small animal NMR and microPET, check), micro and light imaging and state of the art animal facilities.

Research Assistant: Limb growth and repair

The Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute is now accepting applications for the position of Research Assistant in the newly formed Roselló-Díez Group. The position is scheduled to commence in April 2018, with a degree of flexibility around start date.

The Roselló-Díez Group studies how body proportions are regulated in the context of limb growth and repair in vertebrates. The groups focus is on the cells behaviour and communication mechanisms that operate within the growing bones and with other tissues/organs. The main animal models used by the group are the mouse (embryos and pups) and zebrafish (juveniles and adults), with occasional use of transgenic quail embryos.

Desirable applicants should have demonstrable knowledge and experience in:

  • Lab housekeeping
  • Molecular biology
  • Histology
  • Small animal handling
  • Database skills

At a more detailed level, these skills and experiences translate to:

  • Mouse and/or zebrafish colony maintenance
  • Small animal handling and husbandry
  • Mouse surgery and dissection
  • Microinjection
  • DNA, RNA, protein extraction
  • PCR, qPCR
  • Western blot
  • Tissue culture techniques
  • Frozen tissue/paraffin preparation and sectioning
  • Experience with cartilage/bone sectioning will be a plus
  • Fluorescent immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridisation
  • Standard and confocal microscopy
  • Experience with Powerpoint, Excel and/or software to keep track of samples and experiments
  • Lab purchasing, restocking and general lab housekeeping

Additional, but not essential:

  • Experience with the Labtrack system

Postdoctoral Position: Mechanisms of Long Bone Catch-up Growth

A postdoctoral position is available in the Roselló-Díez Group at the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (Monash University, Melbourne), starting July 2018. The group studies the local and systemic mechanisms that regulate organ size and body proportions during development and repair, with a focus on the vertebrate limb. For the advertised project, two main models will be used: a mouse genetic model of transient unilateral insult to the growing limb bones, and transgenic quail models that allow tracking of different cell lineages after local injury.

The successful applicant will have recently earned a PhD in biological sciences or related field, as well as have extensive experience with standard techniques of molecular biology and embryology, ideally including methods of confocal live imaging. Additional experience with mouse genetic models, and/or mathematical modelling will be considered a plus.

Postdoctoral Position: Growth Coordination by Inter-organ Communication

A postdoctoral position is available in the Roselló-Díez laboratory at the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (Monash University, Melbourne), starting July 2018. The laboratory studies the local and systemic mechanisms that regulate organ size and body proportions during development and repair, with a focus on the vertebrate limb. The advertised project will study the inter-organ communication mechanisms that coordinate organ growth in the body, using two models: a genetic model of local limb injury in the mouse embryo that leads to systemic stunting, and zebrafish development and regeneration in diverse mutants affecting inter-organ crosstalk. The main inter-organ communication systems that will be explored are the circulatory and the nervous system. The successful applicant will have recently earned a Ph.D. in biological sciences (or related field), as well as have extensive experience with the zebrafish model and CRISPR/Cas9 approaches. Additional experience with mouse genetic models and bioinformatics skills (RNA-seq and/or proteomics) will be a plus.
